Bamco is delivering on Our Green Promise

The first major step in our green initiative was purchasing a state-of-the-art finishing line that produces a European-quality finish. More importantly to our green initiative, the new Bamco finishing line is spraying all water-based paints, stain and top coats from Renner – a company specializing in wood coatings.

To receive the South Coast Air Quality Management District (SCAQMD) stamp of approval, the maximum acceptable level of VOCs on a top coat finish (including sealers and lacquers) is 550 g/L. At 13 g/L, Bamco and Renner far surpass these levels. We continue to strive towards more environmentally friendly products and processes.

An independent, third-party test performed on cabinet doors produced on our new finishing line showed that the Volatile Organic Compound (VOC) levels in our top coats were “not detectable.” The tests were done on dry doors.

Water-based finishes are the most environmentally clean finishes available because they use tap water as the solvent instead of more traditional toxic solvents such as lacquer thinner. The comparisons are overwhelming:

All our coatings – from our paints and stains to our topcoats are water based. Water-based finishes are not only safer for the consumer and better for the environment but also safer for Bamco’s employees.

Bamco is using a UV curing system. The finishes don’t dry until they are UV cured. This allows us to recover overspray from the coatings and reuse approximately 25% of all excess sprays. We continue to add to the environmentally friendly finishing line and are in the process of adding a heat extraction zone. The heat extraction zone will heat the unused overspray. Once the overspray reaches the boiling point the VOCs become lighter than air and can be removed through evaporation, a natural occurring process. This new process will allow us to reduce our already low VOC emissions to zero.

Water-based finishes provide another benefit to consumers: a more durable finish. Based on American Standard Testing Methods (ASTM), the water-based coating stands up to scratches, material stains such as ketchup, mustard and oil, and sun and other types of damage better than many other traditional finishes.  Renner and The Bamco Group are currently working on a high-gloss finish that will be as green as the rest of our finishes.

To compliment our internal green initiatives, Bamco has created supplier partnerships to ensure that our components are as green as our new finishes.


Sheet Goods

Bamco’s case construction is made withUniboard’s Nu Green Zero Particleboard, which has many green advantages. First and foremost, the board is urea formaldehyde free. Uniboard

has replaced traditional urea formaldehyde resins in their boards with a new resin called phenol formaldehyde. This new resin emits almost no VOCs. The resin is so dense that it traps the last remaining trace VOCs within the product itself. The resulting formaldehyde emissions are .01 parts per million (ppm). A traditional particleboard will emit as much as .30ppm of harmful formaldehyde.

Uniboard Nu-Green Zero particleboard is manufactured with 100% pre-consumer/post-industrial waste. All the board content is gathered from manufacturing facilities. Only clean-waste wood products – such as recycled sawdust, shavings and reclaimed wood – are used in the making of Nu-Green Zero particleboard. And the Nu Green Zero board itself can be recycled. A chemical process can separate the phenol formaldehyde and the raw materials can be reused.

The Nu-Green Zero Particleboard is LEED certified. It is made with Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certified wood and surpasses all standards set for board material including California Air Resource Board (CARB), Environmental Preferable Product (EPP) and the South Coast Air Quality Management District (SCAQMD) criteria.


Additional benefits of Nu-Green Zero board:

  It’s the same quality as a traditional board

The Nu-Green board is available in the complete range of Panval melamine colours.

It is more resistant to water damage, partly due to the use of phenol formaldehyde, which is denser than its counter part.

There are no differences in the way the particleboard performs under stress (based on ASTM testing).

An important note: UniBoard is in its final stages of testing a new no-urea formaldehyde MDF board that emits 0 VOCs. This means painted MDF doors through Bamco will be close to 100% green. Exact statistics will be forthcoming.

Bamco has a full plywood line as well, manufactured by PureBond. The green PureBond plywood uses a soy-based chemical to replace the traditional urea formaldehyde. The PureBond plywood used by Bamco complies with both CARB and  LEED building guidelines.

The PureBond plywood’s VOC level is .05ppm – far superior to most traditional MDFs, particleboards and plywoods. ANSI (American National Standards Institute) has set the maximum acceptable level of VOCs for plywood at .30ppm. The core material of PureBond’s plywood is 100% FSC (Forestry Stewardship Council) certified aspen or white spruce.


Additional benefits to plywood case construction:

The weight of the plywood is far less than that of MDF or particleboard.

PureBond plywood now has a more uniform thickness. • Based on ASTM testing, PureBond plywood has higher resistance to stress and reduced field failures.



Another green Bamco partner is Hettich, a leading manufacturer and supplier of furniture and cabinetry fittings worldwide.

Hettich sets a high priority on avoiding the use of materials that damage health or the environment. The company manufactures our kitchen hardware including door hinges and drawer slides. Hettich hardware is 100% recyclable and made completely of metal and polymers. The green Hettich line does not contain any plastics. All Hettich hardware products are fully recyclable after disassembly or reused to produce new hardware.

Even better, Hettich is known for the longevity and durability of their products. Hettich has focused on precision engineering to develop environmentally friendly hardware that is endurance tested and built to last. Hettich product development has involved a continuous optimization process aimed at minimizing energy and resource consumption. Their products are high quality and have a long life.

LEED Certification- The leadership in Energy and Environmental Design

LEED Certification, the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Green Building Rating System™, encourages and accelerates global adoption of sustainable green building and development practices through the creation and implementation of universally understood and accepted tools and performance criteria.

LEED is a third-party certification program and an internationally accepted benchmark for the design, construction and operation of high performance green buildings. It provides building owners and operators the tools they need to have an immediate and measurable impact on their building’s performance. LEED promotes a whole-building approach to sustainability by recognizing performance in key areas of human and environmental health.

LEED certification for homes focuses on the following seven categories – Innovation and design process; Location and linkages; Water efficiency; Energy and atmosphere; Materials and resources; Indoor environmental quality; Awareness and education

LEED certification for homes focuses on the following seven categories – Innovation and design process; Location and linkages; Water efficiency; Energy and atmosphere; Materials and resources; Indoor environmental quality; Awareness and education. The program is based on a points system. If enough points are gained the building project is awarded a LEED certificate. If expectations are met or exceeded, governmental benefits can apply, such as tax credits.


ASTM-American Standard Testing Methods

ASTM is a set of standardized tests that have to be run on every product (tests vary depending on the product). Tests set out in the ASTM books are created to ensure not only quality but safety of all products on the market.

The most commonly known facilitators of these tests are the Ca-

nadian Standards Association (CSA) in Canada and the American National Standards Institute in the United Sates.


CARB-California Air Resource Board

CARB is a pioneer in developing air quality criteria and tests. CARB has developed the most stringent expectations for green programs and standards and continues to raise the bar on environmental air quality.


VOC-Volatile Organic Compounds

A VOC is any substance that will evaporate at temperature of use and which, by a hotochemical reaction, will cause oxygen in the air to be converted into smog-promoting ozone under favorable climatic conditions. Simply stated, VOC refers to organic chemical compounds which

have significant vapor pressures and which can affect the environment and human health. It is important to note that VOCs also occur naturally – they are created by plants, water, volcanoes and other natural sources. Outdoor VOCs are generated by vehicles and other machinery. VOCs are proven to be carcinogenic and pose health risks. Reducing VOCs is very important to Bamco.

Our goal is to reduce the amount of VOCs produced by cabinetry. For instance, formaldehyde is a pungent gas used in solutions as a strong disinfectant and preservative and in the production of synthetic resins, dyes, etc. Formaldehyde is a VOC and can cause serious health risks if a person is exposed to large amounts. The reduction of formaldehyde in our kitchens is an important factor in our green initiative.
